The name "Fermiento" blends "Fermentation," the essential process behind our artisanal goods, with "Sarmiento," the surname of our founder. This fusion not only highlights our dedication to traditional craftsmanship but also pays homage to the deeply rooted culture and heritage that inspire our products.
Fermentation is a natural process where tiny organisms like bacteria and yeast break down sugars in food without using oxygen. They convert these sugars into alcohol, acids, and gases, which help preserve the food and change its flavor and texture. This is how we get foods and drinks like kombucha, ginger ale, tepache, sourdough bread, and pickled vegetables. The process makes these products taste unique and can also make them healthier.
Fermentation offers numerous benefits, including food preservation by creating an environment that inhibits harmful bacteria, extending shelf life. It enhances nutrition by increasing vitamin and mineral availability and making foods easier to digest, while also providing probiotics that improve gut health. Fermentation boosts flavor and texture, creating unique culinary experiences. Additionally, it supports sustainability by using seasonal, locally available ingredients, reducing food waste and carbon footprints. Economically, fermentation lowers food costs and holds cultural significance by preserving traditional food practices and heritage.
Each product is crafted using traditional fermentation techniques, honoring cultural heritage and ensuring the highest quality. We are committed to sustainability by supporting local farmers and sourcing the freshest ingredients, with some ingredients hand-foraged in Alaska. We strive to be eco-friendly by using seasonal ingredients, reducing waste, and producing in small batches. As an Asian-owned, woman-owned, and veteran-owned small business, we support our community, including other small businesses.
We are currently in the process of becoming fully operational, so our products aren't available for regular purchase just yet. However, keep an eye out for upcoming farmers' markets in the area, as we plan to have a presence there soon. Follow us on social media and check our website for updates on our market appearances and the official launch of our products. Thank you for your support and patience as we prepare to bring Fermiento's delicious fermented goods to you!
